1. Deloitte: 85% of organisations increased investment in sustainability this past year

Deloitte surveyed 2,103 C-level executives for its 2024 CxO Sustainability report and found that climate change remains a top three issue for them. The report also revealed that 85 per cent of CxOs say they have increased investments in sustainability in the past year – up from 75 per cent in 2023 – with 70 per cent believing climate change will have a significant impact on strategies and operations over the next three years.

2. Walmart says it reduced food waste and avoided 1 gigaton of greenhouse gas emissions

With a stated mission to achieve Net Zero by 2040, Walmart has partnered with organic materials recycler Denali, placing its food packaging tech in 1,400 Walmart stores and Sam’s Clubs. The technology named Zero Depack – which separates food waste from packaging waste – can separate as much as 97 per cent of all trash from organic food waste, with 1 Denali truck collecting 11 tons of food waste from 18 Walmart stores.

3. IBM guide targets Asia Pacific, where only 21% of organisations have a strategic approach to sustainability

IBM teamed with Ecosystm, a global research and advisory company, to develop its Sustainability Technology Guide for Executives to address the key sustainability questions executives face. It’s specifically aimed at empowering business leaders in the Asia-Pacific region, because the IBM/Ecosystm study found that only one fifth of organisations in APAC have ‘a truly strategic approach for sustainability.’ The study also found that 48 per cent of organisations struggle to integrate automation and AI system data with enterprise data, leaving them unable to view or stay on top of sustainability impacts.

4. Report: 66% of students want to act for a more sustainable and inclusive society

Edtech provider GoStudent surveyed 5,581 children, parents or guardians, and teachers across Europe to develop its Future of Education Report 2024. The report reveals trends around the desire for change in teaching in relation to technology and hybrid learning: 76 per cent of students say they are concerned about the environment and 66 per cent want more action taken towards a sustainable and inclusive society.

5. 40,000 tonnes of annual emissions savings achieved through hydrothermal plastic recycling tech

In collaboration with WMG at the University of Warwick, chemical recycler Mura Technology has secured a grant from the non-departmental public body Innovate UK, as the company aims to develop more than 1.5 million tonnes of recycling capacity worldwide by 2032. Using its hydrothermal plastic recycling technology (Hydro-PRT), Mura Technology recycles plastic waste to create virgin-grade plastics for reuse such as in food packaging. Since opening its 20,000-tonne-a-year Hydro-PRT site in 2023, it claims an annual carbon emissions savings of 40,000 tonnes.

6. 52% of executives expect to see increased efficiencies and ROI through enhanced ESG reporting

Deloitte’s 2024 Sustainability Action Report found an increase in executive responsibility in recent years to improve oversight of sustainability reporting, with a rise in the number of Chief Sustainability Officers from 42 per cent to 55 per cent since December 2022. Of the 300 executives surveyed, 55 per cent stated that the CSO has management responsibility for ESG disclosure, and just over half anticipated increased efficiencies and ROI through better ESG reporting.

7. Fujitsu: 63% of CxOs think AI will contribute to the success of sustainability transformation

A survey carried out by Fujitsu, in collaboration with Oxford Economics, gathered insights from 800 CxOs across 15 countries to understand how sustainability transformation is being impacted by AI technology and use. The report found that 63 per cent of business leaders believe that successfully delivered financial and non-financial outcomes through organisations’ sustainability transformations has typically been due to an increased investment in AI.

8. Amazon offers 11 startups a potential €2 million to tackle complex environmental challenges

Through the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator, a programme that supports startups innovating in the sustainability sector, 11 startups from across Europe, the US and Canada have an opportunity to team with Amazon. Each company will receive funding of up to €2 million to trial their innovations for tackling electronic waste, packaging methods, building materials and the use of AI to improve energy efficiency.
