Around the world in seven words
The are many reasons to sign up to the Collective Content newsletter, which you can do here. One of them is the Word, or Words, of the Moment we feature in each edition.
Here’s a quick walk though some of our words of 2023.
January
New President of Brazil; Edward Norton related to Pocahontas
Word of the moment: Teaming
We thought this one had gone away, but it has new life as tech and skills markets evolve and become more fluid.
February
South Africa electricity crisis
Word of the moment: Ideate
The newsletter’s ed team are not always looking for the newest words, but ones that are flexing their muscles. Some are ugly. Ideation has been described as a process where “people who don’t have ideas try to get them from less well remunerated people who do.”
March
Open letter to pause AI experiments; Best Actress – Michelle Yeoh
Word of the moment: Process mining
A serious business one. The new kid on the IT block. Optimising and rationalising business processes with the help of bespoke software.
April
France riots
Word of the moment: Rage farming
Provoking anger to gain exposure. The professional MO of many a media outlet and journalist these days. It’s all the…
June
Phosphates discovered on Enceladus
Word of the moment: Rainbow capitalism
Corporate brands looking for promotional opportunities during Pride without necessarily supporting LGBTQ+ community at other times of the year.
Then summer came (for those in the Northern Hemisphere)…
October
Britain’s loneliest sheep
Word of the moment: Indiginise
Not a new word, but a slightly new usage. “Limiting China’s access to chips will indigenise advanced Chinese chip production.”
November
Word of the moment: Zero consumer
Zero boundaries, zero brand loyalty and zero patience. These omnichannel shoppers are on the rise and are increasingly important to future-facing businesses.
Word (or phrase) of the year
The Collective Content newsletter ed team have conferred, and we agree on:
Uncanny valley
Human queasiness when audio or visual simulations resemble humans but are not fully realistic. A possible flaw in the argument that GenAI will rule us all in the marketing space. Could also describe the whole of 2023.
Sign up to the Collective Content newsletter for more words of the moment and also the latest insights, thinking and ideas (to help you ideate), over the hillsides of the valley in a box-fresh ‘24.
